Traditional green tea shop Chaikedaya in Shinjuku Station

Shinjuku Station is a place where you can get lost inadvertently or deliberately. Sometimes I don’t change trains immediately and stroll there, doing some real but mostly window shopping. So last time in the South Building I spotted this traditional matcha tea shop with more than 70 years history, Chaikedaya (茶の池田や).ChaikedayaChaikedayaNot only they have dozens of various matcha and other green teas for sale, they also offer soft serve matcha ice-cream and other matcha-flavored sweets at Chaikedaya.ChanoikedayaIf you are thirsty, you can get some cold matcha tea to go in a cup or a bottle. Although you can’t get a matcha latte, you can opt for milk matcha tea.ChanoikedayaMatcha sauce is a great invention: you can pour it on ice-cream, pancakes, crepes, or make your own matcha parfait.

I am not a big fan of traditional strawberry daifuku, but daifuku with matcha and cream at Chaikedaya looks irresistible. Then there are high-grade matcha cookies.ChanoikedayaEven if you are not too fond of powdered tea, there is always an opportunity to buy a new mug or other tea utensils at the shop.Chanoikedaya

If you buy something often, you might as well get a card for stamps. Each 500 yen of purchases equal one stamp. After collecting 30 stamps you can get a 500 yen present.

Tea gourmets can purchase order made tea here, and for coffee lovers Chaikedaya has freshly roasted coffee beans.
