Fun summer activities at Tokyo Midtown – Ashimizu

Beating the heat is one of our main concerns in summer here in Tokyo. While office workers can enjoy air conditioning at their workplace, other people try to find cool places elsewhere. One nice location in the center is Tokyo Midtown. Within a walking distance from Roppongi Hills and Azabu-Juban, it is a great place for summer relaxation. Although the best part does not begin until the evening (Bacardi Midpark Cafe with mojitos, Summer Light Garden at Grass Square with digital fireworks), afternoon offers a soak for your feet in a small river. This activity is called ashimizu (足水). It is one of the traditional ways of beating the summer heat in Japan that existed before A/C.

With numerous restaurants and cafes within one-minute walk, this place perfect for a date.

Don’t forget to bring a towel to wipe you feet after the foot bath. Even if you don’t, don’t worry – you can rent one for 100 yen.

If you are a flower lover like myself, you will probably also enjoy various kinds of Morning Glories, asagao (朝顔) in Japanese, especially their fragrant smell and vivid colors.
