Centre for Remembering 3.11 in Sendai Mediatheque

Situated in Miyagi prefecture, Sendai is the biggest metropolis in the Tohoku (north-east) region of Japan. As you walk among the busy crowds under the tall glass buildings, there may be moments when you forget that the biggest earthquake in Japanese history ever hit this city.

But the locals remember, and they wish the world to never forget the people whose lives have been forever affected by the earthquake. The damage inflicted has never really disappeared and there are still people struggling. For this reason, the “centre for remembering 3.11” was founded to circulate information concerning various support activities aftermath, which will also serve as a record for future generations.

In the centre, you can find videos, pictures and audio concerning the earthquake.

The centre is located on the top floor of the Sendai Mediatheque, a city library which suffered serious damage during the earthquake. Sendai Mediatheuqe was partly reopened two months after the earthquake but it was only in January 2012 that the whole building was fully opened to the public. You can find pictures and text describing the process in the centre.

Sendai Mediatheque itself is a stunning building that is worth visiting. Its glass walls allows sunlight to fully penetrate the building and you can enjoy the sunlight even sitting inside. There are also canteens, and a shop that sells Sendai-related products.
