Segafredo Zanetti: One of the best coffee shops for expats in Tokyo

«Segafredo Zanetti» in Hiroo is not your typical coffee shop. It conveniently stands on a corner within a stone’s throw from National Azabu Supermarket and Arisugawa-no-Miya Memorial Park.

These three places are a haven for foreign wives in Tokyo. Even though Little Pie Factory has appeared on the scene lately, it will never beat that unique atmosphere of Zanetti. With Bohemians watching from the open terraces, the smell of real Italian espresso and the scattered sounds of foreign languages, at times you can’t help feeling as though you are at the modern Tower of Babel.

Even the staff try to chirp cheerfully in Italian while taking your order, pulling shots and serving your coffee. The company actually promotes its international reputation and accentuates it in every possible way.

Their lattes and cappuccinos are made so lovingly and professionally that you will barely notice that this is a chain coffee shop. Just don’t be greedy like me and order a size G (grande) which comes in a paper cup. I now know that really good cappuccino does not come in a paper cup, even a fancy one.

The single espresso shot was drowned in all that milk and I didn’t enjoy holding a warm cup in my hands on that rainy day! But I was able to take a photo of Zanetti’s signature latte art.
