Take a Bicycle Ride Through the Cherry Blossom Tunnel at Jofuku The cherry blossoms bloom around the end of March, beginning of April in Saga. As elsewhere in Japan, this fleeting event is one which many people look forward to every year. And, if you are anything like me and miss the timing of hanami (cherry blossom viewing) you’re left with a feeling of restlessness. A great way to enjoy the cherry blossoms in Saga is to take a bicycle ride around town. In particular, I’d recommend a trip along the Jofuku cycling road. This two lane dedicated cycling path runs 5km along a former railway route and is lined most of the way on either side by cherry trees, the branches of which arch over the path. In spring it is transformed into a cherry blossom tunnel! It is truly an exhilarating feeling gliding through the blossom tunnel. It runs alongside route 208 from the former Minami Saga Station building (at the point where the south bypass turns down to Moridomi) to the Moridomi Tetsubashi Tenbo Park on the banks of the Chikugo river. From here you can see the Shokaikyo red iron bridge. If you have time, take a moment to relax and watch the boats sail along the Chikugo river. The cherry trees are in full bloom for only a week or so before the petals begin to scatter. Some say that this fleetingness only adds to their charm. I managed to catch the blossoms at their best this year. Keep this route in mind for next year’s cherry blossom season! Comments are closed. Facebook | Share Twitter | Tweet
