Relax like a Japanese: Ryokan Sanyoso in Shizuoka

As a child, I had this secret dream of owning a castle or at least living in one. 20 years later this dream almost came true. I am drinking tea in our huge room of Ryokan Sanyoso, traditional Japanese hotel in Izunokuni, Shizuoka Prefecture, and it is a bother to go wash my cup. In total, our Western-Japanese room (和洋室) called Ran, was about 78 square meters.Ryokan SanyosoRan means “orchid”, and we have a picture on the wall to prove it. Actually, you will see many flowers on the territory depending on the season you check in. If you visit Sanyoso Ryokan in the end of January to end of Februaru, for example, Kanzakura cheery trees will be blooming. In the beginning to middle April you can enjoy Shidarezakura cherry blossoms, and now is the season of Kantsubaku camellia. Maple leaves turn red in Izunagaoka in November.

Ryokan Sanyoso boasts an exquisite Japanese garden, which in at is best in spring and autumn. You don’t even have to get out of the room to see it. Lovely verandas and corridors have got you covered!

The premises of the ryokan occupy 138,600 square meters. Even the staff confessed that they have to walk so much every day that they can’t stop eating to replenish the energy. Founded in 1947, now Ryokan Sanyoso belongs to Prince Hotels and Resorts, Japan’s largest hotel chain. Our room came at a very reasonable price.Ryokan SanyosoPeacefullness and silence of long corridors may play a trick on you, though. Some lively Japanese obaasans will pop up unexpectedly when you will decide that onsen is all yours. It will happen at any time of the day and night, and you will be immediately immersed in the chattering, laughing, and exclamations “Kimochi ii” (Feels good)!Ryokan SanyosoThe onsen is called “Izunagaoka hot spring”. It is a simple alkaline onsen that cures rheumatic disease, locomotory problems, nerve paralysis, and is good for recovering after diseases. It may be just my imagination, but I think my backache has gone just after soaking in the hot waters of Izunagaoka onsen.
