Nordic Lifestyle Market Aoyama: Time for Swedish Fika, Scandinavian books, and Finnish jazz!

Throughout the year there more than enough opportunities to taste, both figuratively and literally, the Nordic culture in Tokyo. But as all things temporary, Nordic Lifestyle Market is attractive mostly due to its brevity.

Nordic Lifestyle Market is held in Aoyama sporadically. In November 2015 I had missed my chance to visit, but this spring my friend revived my forgotten wish. Less than half a year later, and I’m at the market. Or, more precisely, at the markets. Everything was delightfully and a bit messily mixed up: the usual weekend Farmer’s Market, an Antiques Market, and the Nordic Lifestyle Market.Nordic Lifestyle MarketNaturally, we were ready to make our way through the crowd, but there wasn’t any. Cold, almost Nordic weather with drizzling rain didn’t stop only the bravest and the most die-hard fans of Scandinavian culture, food and drinks.Nordic Lifestyle MarketCraft coffee by Fuglen and other shops warmed our hands, and Finnish jazz warmed our souls.Nordic Lifestyle MarketThere was a real cat from the photos called Suka, but it was almost impossible to get close to him and his girlfriend.Nordic Lifestyle MarketNordic Lifestyle MarketThat book truck looked like a mobile library, and a stand with Scandinavian books for sale.Nordic Lifestyle MarketAlthough there were no books in English, just a glance at some book covers was enough to bring back sweet memories. I especially love Pettson and his talking cat Findus, lovingly created by Swen Nordqvist, a Swedish writer.Nordic Lifestyle MarketNo Nordic Lifestyle Market would be complete without Moomins, and the stall which featured them was the most popular among women of all nationalities and ages.

I also found out that Fika is a Swedish coffee break (or even a concept), and that Scandinavian people also like carrot cake very much.Nordic Lifestyle MarketI also love fcinnamon rolls (kannelbullar in Swedish). I think I might as well be Scandinavian-at-heart!
