Excellent grilled eel from Kagoshima Prefecture at Noboritei Ginza

Noboritei Ginza (登亭) is a Japanese freshwater eel, or unagi restaurant in Ginza. It is not always crowded, and there are usually no long lines in front of Noboritei, but their broiled eel from Kagoshima is one of the best in the area.Noboritei GinzaNoboritei GinzaGrilled or broiled eel is a delicacy appropriate for celebratory dining out. We rarely eat it but I love and really appreciate the opportunities to try grilled eel again.

The rice they use is Koshi Hikari from Niigata Prefecture, and the eel is from Kagoshima Prefecture.Noboritei GinzaThere are four options of unadon (鰻丼, eel bowl) and unaju (うな重, unagi piled over rice) with different amounts of eel, rice, and of course prices. Although not cheap, the prices are reasonable. However, Noboritei had closed several locations earlier and the only one thriving branch is in Ginza.Noboritei GinzaAny box of unagi at Noboritei Ginza, as is customary for eel restaurants, comes with a side dish of Japanese pickes, and I usually an extra portion from my husband. Then there’s also a clear eel liver soup (kimosui), which does not look very great but is really good for the body.Noboritei Ginza

The eel liver (kimo) contains vitamin A, iron, calcium and whatnot. Kimoyaki is a dish of grilled eel livers which goes well with beer or sake.Noboritei GinzaThe menu at Noboritei Ginza is Japanese-English, but you will have to figure out where is soy sauce (on the left in the picture), dipping sauce (on the right) and other things.Noboritei Ginza

The staff does not speak any English, but the pictures of main dishes are quite exhaustive. And they have free Wi-Fi at the restaurant.
