A world of cute and mystical figurines from Ibaraki

Japanese people are very good at telling folktales. If you visit galleries, you can learn lots of interesting things about Japanese culture and see many things you wouldn’t normally see or even think about in everyday life. For example, if you go to Mona Gallery in Azabu-Juban this week, you can meet an interesting sculptor Kyoko Takahashi from Ibaraki Prefecture and see such legendary creatures as dragons, foxes, Moon rabbits, kappa (water mosters), oni (Japanese demons), Urashima Taro and many others.

When I dropped by, the artist poured me a cup of green tea and we talked for about half an hour. Despite my poor Japanese, I could understand most of her stories. Kyoko Takahashi told me that life in a rural mountain area is a real blessing. She can take a walk and enjoy fresh air anytime she wants, and often sees the magical foxes’ weddings (狐の嫁入り).
