Mount Takao: Perhaps The Most Visited Mountain in the World!

Mount Takao (Takaosan) can be reached by train in less than an hour from central Tokyo so you can easily make a day trip of it. Although within the Tokyo metropolitan area, it is a place of abundant nature.

One of Tokyo’s popular tourist spots, Mt. Takao is visited by thousands of tourists and hikers throughout the year. Since 2007 it has been classified as a 3-star tourist site by the Michelin Guide which has certainly influenced its popularity.

You’ll find hikers of all ages, from the very young to the very old. Recently, there has been an increase in foreign hikers too.

According to the Japan National Tourism Organization web site, the number of foreign visitors to Japan in 2014 was up 30 % from the previous year and the numbers are expected to continue to rise.

With an estimated 2.5 million visitors per year, Mt Takao is said to attract the largest number of hikers in the world. So naturally, you’d expect to see many foreign hikers among them.
So, what exactly is the appeal of Mount Takao?

When you reach the summit on a clear day, you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of Tokyo. Shinjuku is clearly visible from here.

Despite the fact that the mountain is within easy reach of central Tokyo it is surrounded by abundant nature. You can enjoy nature and breathe the fresh air.

There is also a temple at the top of the mountain, Takaosan Yaokuoin which has a history of over 1270 years. So you can experience a little traditional Japanese culture too!

Soba noodles with grated yam is a speciality here and you’ll see queues at a number of soba restaurants in the shopping district at the foot of the mountain.

You can immerse yourself in nature, experience a little history and culture and eat a delicious meal all in one day. The convenience of Mt. Takao is the secret to its popularity.

Born and raised in Hachioji, Mt. Takao has always been a familiar presence, and it makes me happy to think that it has captivated the attention of so many people.
