Moomin Bakery & Cafe in Laqua, TOKYO DOME

Right now Japan is in the middle of Nordic Boom. Forget Hawaiian Pancakes and head for (no, not IKEA meatballs) Moomin latte!

When to visit

Try visiting on weekdays. If you are brave enough, do come on the weekend, but you will end up in a long line of Moomin fans (mostly Japanese). Holidays are another big no-no.

But, if you find yourself in a long line, don’t waste your time fiddling with your iPhone. As you approach the entrance, you will be handed a menu so that you can make your choice before you actually get in.

Given that, you can concentrate on taking photos and enjoying the atmosphere of this Fairytale world to the fullest.

Who to bring with you

Of all your friends, try to find one who is at least a bit interested in Finland or Nordic countries. Ideally, take a friend who likes Tove Jansson and her books, or who watched the Moomin TV series. Otherwise, you will end up in a long line WITH a grumpy husband, as I did.

What to expect and what not to expect

Don’t fall for all those rumors on the web about a plushy Moomin for every lone diner. They will just give you which ever toy is available. If possible, opt for a bigger table, and maybe you will get Snork Maiden or Moominpappa sitting next to you!

Don’t expect out-of-this-world tastes. Just enjoy cute Moomins, Snuffkin and Little My everywhere. On special occasions like Valentine’s day or Moomin’s day (celebrated on August, 9th to commemorate Tove Jansson’s birthday) you can choose some special items, unavailable on an everyday basis.

If it is your birthday month, print and fill out their special coupon, which can be used from 11 am. You will get a free drink! Download the coupon here: http://www.benelic.com/moomin_cafe/tokyo_dome/birthday/

Be prepared to pay more than usual. Adorable Moomin lattes or Moomin omurice (Japanese omelette rice) do not come cheap.

Mommin cafe 5If you are on a shoe string budget, you can choose from a variety of Moomin-themed sandwiches, sweet buns, some Finnish rye bread and whatnot in the bakery.
