Sometimes we all long for a bit of nostalgia and a touch of the classics. This is when coffee shops like Mikado Coffee come in handy. Their brews have good acidity and go very well with any sweets.

Hige Ojisan (‘a guy with a moustache’) is the hallmark of Mikado Coffee. He looks very Mexican to me. There are many Mexican figurines at Mikado Coffee Karuizawa.

Another thing that makes the Mikado brand recognizable among coffee shops is its モカソフト, coffee flavored soft serve ice-cream. It is also used for their famous coffee float, which is garnished with a dried Californian prune.Mikado Coffee KaruizawaMikado Coffee Karuizawa

Mikado Coffee was founded in 1948, but the Karuizawa branch was opened in 1952. At that time it was a pioneer of bean roasting and the Japanese (and of course foreign expats) were not yet spoilt by single-origin beans. Naturally, it became a hit with the locals, providing the mild, acidic taste of arabica instead of harsh robusta with a bitter aftertaste.
