Meiji Gakuin Shirokane – Campus of the oldest Christian school in Tokyo

Meiji Gakuin dates back to 1863, when it was founded as an English school by an American missionary James Curtis Hepburn. The same person who created Hepburn romanization, the most widely used system of romaji (‘Roman letters’)! And the person who helped to translate the Bible into Japanese. C.J. Curtis worked in Japan with medical mission from American Presbyterian Mission. He once said ‘Do for others what you want them to do for you’.Meiji Gakuin Shirokane

The full name of the place is 明治学院大学 (Meiji gakuin daigaku), and it is a private university where students can do a four-year university program or a postgraduate course, and acquire an excellent knowledge of English. There are two campuses – one in Tokyo and one in Yokohama.

Meiji Gakuin Chapel was originally built in 1916 and completely restored in 2006 – 2008 to enhance the earthquake resistance. It is also used for wedding ceremonies.Meiji Gakuin Shirokane

Unless you are a student of Meiji Gakuin Shirokane, you won’t be let on the premises. But the spot before the entrance will let  you catch a glimpse of its exquisite architecture and travel in time to the very beginning of Meiji Gakuin Shirokane.Meiji Gakuin ShirokaneAnd this building looks fabulous in the evening as well as in the daytime!Meiji Gakuin ShirokaneTo tell the truth, if I was a little younger (and had a lot of spare money), I would have loved to study at Meiji Gakuin Shirokane. It really looks like a place where you can get a good education and enjoy your student years. And it is located in the heart of Tokyo! However, their promotional brochure is entirely in Japanese, so I can’t tell you any details about studying there.Meiji Gakuin Shirokane
