Makuhari Messe

I had to make a presentation at a Japan Geoscience Union Meeting a few weeks ago. The venue was Makuhari Messe convention center. Messe? Hmm… sounds like the German word for exhibition. I remember going to Hannover Messe for the Cebit International Exhibition in 2010. Hanover Messe is a new city with modern architecture and concepts. Would it be as good as the Messe in Germany?

I underestimated Makuhari! When I arrived at Mahima-ku where Makuhari messe is located, I was immediately impressed by this modern city and its architecture. It has a good balance of buildings, roads, pedestrian walks, promenades and recreation areas. Beside the big beautiful buildings, there is also a huge baseball stadium, the Chiba QVC Marine stadium. This stadium is home to Chiba Lotte Marines.

The long connecting overpass promenade is unique. The overpass promenade is not only for people crossing the road but also connects the buildings directly. There are elevators and ramps for people who are not able to use the stairs.

Makuhari messe is actually the convention building. It is a very beautiful huge modern building. It is used for large events and exhibitions. I really appreciated being able to present my research in this building. It has many presentation rooms and exhibition buildings. Unfortunately, I wasn’t allowed to use my camera to capture the exhibition.
