Komeda’s Coffee in Sugamo – A touch of modernity in “Grandma’s Harajuku”

A long-awaited walk in Sugamo, shopping street for older generation, offers many lunch opportunities. But I didn’t quite realize how popular a chain cafe Komeda’s Coffee is. It was difficult to get in around 2 pm on a weekday. I wrote my name on a waiting list and joined a cheerful group of Japanese ladies under the Komeda’s portrait.Komeda'sSurprisingly, the wait was only 5 minutes, and very soon I was comfortably sitting on a dark red plush  chairs. They don’t have tables  for one or two (at least in the non-smoking part) at Komeda’s Coffee in Sugamo.Komeda's

As soon as you decided what to order, you push the buzzer. I went with Viennese Coffee for 520 yen. A huge swirl of whipped cream and a stick of cinnamon played a primary role in this choice. Although I doubt that adding a cinnamon stick in the coffee, which is already starting to cool down, is sensible. Even the sweet aftertaste of whipped cream, sprinkled with ground cinnamon could not conceal the weakness of of coffee. I even felt that I cheated myself into eating dessert with my coffee instead of drinking it black and almost non-calorie.Komeda'sAnd those bonus sugar-coated beans came with my coffee!

Next time I will order a coffee or strawberry milkshake. Many customers order them, they look simple but stylish. And coupled with the brick and wooden walls, you can imagine that you are having a meal at a real farm.Komeda'sMorning service at Komeda’s is available until 11 am, and it is a real steal! Try out if you are around, and get a free piece of toast and a boiled egg with your drink, or a small salad for 200 yen.Komeda's
