Sushi-go-round in Numazu: Restaurant Ikeikemaru

Do you like kaiten sushi? You go to this kind of restaurant with friends or family and don’t worry too much about the bill… Because it’s a cheap sushi restaurant, right? Well, it depends on the appetite of your party. There’s a scene in the Japanese drama, Nodame Cantabile (about musicians), where Nodame eats only the cheap sushi such as tamagoyaki (rolled egg), and her friend Chiyaki eats only the expensive sushi such as sea urchin or other delicacies. They ended up paying a lot even though Nodame thought they would need no more than 3000 yen. This is exactly what happened when my Japanese husband and I stopped by Ikeikemaru, sushi-go-round restaurant in Numazu.

IkeikemaruI have a confession to make: this was my first experience of eating at such a restaurant. I don’t really like raw fish and rarely eat sushi. But I was curious about how it works. At first, it was delightful to look at all these colorful plates moving round and round. Then it dawned on me that most of the sushi had been there way too long to stay fresh. They looked rather weathered, and I probably looked rather disappointed by that revelation. That’s when my husband stepped in and started ordering. Things started getting better as our personal plates arrived.

IkeikemaruBut then it became clear that we had ordered too much, and, not the cheapest sushi. The price depends on the color of the plate. We stacked all our plates and I started to calculate the maths in preparation for the shock at the register.

IkeikemaruIn the end, our dinner didn’t turn out cheap. However, considering the amount of food we consumed, I think that it was significantly cheaper than eating at a traditional sushi restaurant.

Ikeikemaru I didn’t have the courage to try this dessert in Ikeikemaru: ice-cream with hundreds of little eyes of whitebait staring at you. Even the thought of ordering it makes me feel a little sick.
