Hiryugama Kiln: Valentine Lantern Festival in the World’s Largest Ascending Kiln

There’s something quite magical about the Hiryugama kiln lantern festival.

This annual festival in Takeo, has a romantic twist, taking place on Valentines weekend. The 2015 festival was held on 14th and 15th of February.

Almost 6000 hand crafted ceramic lanterns and thousands more illuminations line the paths around the kiln . Each candle is lit by hand, so you can imagine how much time it takes to light them all!
By nightfall you are greeted by this delightful sight.
Hiryugama kiln boasts the world’s largest ascending kiln, with a total length of 23 metres, and is capable of firing an impressive 120,000 cups at a time. However, for these two days, the kilns are transformed into a cafe and exhibition area.
Outside, Taiko drum and dance performances entertain the guests.
A stroll through this magnificent sea of lanterns in mid winter will warm and sooth your soul. Afterwards, why not follow with a relaxing hot spring bath (onsen) in Takeo to do the same for your body!
See you next year!
