Henri Charpentier in Ginza: Trying a Black Forest Cake

Up until recently I couldn’t understand my rather strange passion with cherries soaked in alcohol. Neither could my husband. Whenever I see a piece of Black forest cake, I just can’t choose any other (equally amazing) cakes or desserts. As I expected, it happened at one of the best pâtisseries in Tokyo, Henri Charpentier. My other half always orders his favorite Crêpes Suzette, one of their classic desserts (he’s a stickler for routine and does not like changes). Henri CharpentierI, on the other hand, never miss a chance to try something new on the menu. However, this time I was a bit disappointed. My cake was on the sweet side, resembling the North American Black Forest cake rather than the German version. I’m not even sure if there was any kirchwasser or simply kirch (“cherry water” in German), also called cherry brandy, used in it.Henri CharpentierLater I checked out this variation of Black Forest cake on the website of Henri Charpentier, but it was already gone. At least at Ginza Maison Store there are some classic desserts that never go away, and there are always some new desserts/cakes. By the way, the most popular cakes go away very quickly, so you might want to visit earlier in the day. If you are not fond of rather stiff French tea salon atmosphere and pricey drinks, you can always take out financiers and Madeleines here, or cakes at depachikas (Isetan, Daimaru and Takashimaya).Henri Charpentier

Today I realized the reason I choose Black Forest cakes so often. It is kirch that reminds me of childhood. In my childhood we always called cherries with any kind of alcohol the “drunken cherries”. On holidays like Christmas or New Year, such occasions as anniversaries or birthdays, a box of Kirch Cherry Chocolates was usually opened. When I was at high school, we used to drink a little cherry liqueur at my friend’s birthday. Somehow, alcohol-soaked cherries became one of the most important attributes for celebrations, and a nostalgic memory as well.
