French galettes and cider in Funabashi: Hazukisha Just a few steps from Funabashi Station there is a little French style galette shop ”Hazukisha”. Drinking some cider and eating savory buckwheat galettes while listening to French chanson… What can be more relaxing? The light blue exterior of the shop is very calm and stylish. You will meet these cute little frogs welcoming the customers at the entrance. If it brings to mind an old joke about frog-eaters, rest assured that there are no frog legs on the menu. Close your eyes as you eat your potage and imagine that you are in France at least for a moment. The soup of the day at Hazukisha was potage St. Germain. It is made with green peas and allegedly was eaten at the court of Louis XIV. On weekends and holidays, you can pay 350 yen extra and get a lunch set A with a galette, which includes a soup and a drink. On weekdays it may be cheaper. For an extra 450 yen, you can get a bacon salad and a drink (lunch set B) or, alternatively, a crepe with ice-cream or two scoops of ice-cream with a drink (lunch set C). Sitting at the counter (first floor) enables you to watch the process of making your galette. If you were too busy talking and didn’t pay attention to the galette maker inside, there is also a stylish blackboard with preparation steps outside. If you are allergic to spices, you might ask the staff to take it easy on black pepper. I didn’t choose the galette with pepper sausage, but my mushroom and bacon galette was abundantly sprinkled with coarse ground black pepper. It was 950 yen. Unfortunately, there is no English menu. You need to be able to read hiragana or katakana, or make sure to bring a friend who can.
