Mulled wine and traditional Christmas treats in Gotanda: German Christmas Market

The annual Christmas Market in German Church, Gotanda is not as popular as other Christmas markets in Tokyo. Also, the church is located a good 10-minute walk from Gotanda Station, and is inconspicuous. All those signs made me think that the market would be very low-key and peaceful, without lines and noise. How wrong I was…

German Market in GotandaGerman Market in GotandaThere were many overpriced traditional German cookies like Nurnberger, Lebkuhen (Gingerbread), Husarenkrapfen (thumbprint cookies) and marzipans, but I was mostly lured by the cakes. Unfortunately, I wasn’t alone. Too many people were awaiting their chance to try homemade cakes donated by German families, so my dream didn’t come true. At least this time.

German Market in GotandaAll I could do was stare at those scrumptious slices of Paradise. Especially the world famous Black Forest cake.

And drink Glühwein (mulled wine), of course. It was too hot! It felt very nice to hold a warm ceramic mug in such a cold weather.

German Market in GotandaIt’s time to listen and sing along to the season’s music, eat sweets imported directly from Germany, and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere.
