Getting ready for the hay fever season in Japan

Do you suffer from hay fever (花粉症, kafunsho), my dear reader? If the answer is negative, it’s wonderful! If you also have a hay fever, welcome to the club! Both me and my husband are allergic to several kinds of pollen. One of them is a pollen of Cryptomeria japonica (Japanese cedar), but there are also many kinds of pollen we haven’t identified yet. Although I don’t know whether it is coming from some flowers, trees, or other plants, the fact is: when spring comes, we just can’t stop wheezing and sneezing. Add watery eyes to that, and life becomes miserable… Drinking antihistamines in the morning makes me sleepy and is not an option.

Unless you find some natural remedies, it is very difficult to do anything in the hay fever season. Here are some popular ways to ease your symptoms that Japanese people use. The trick is to use them daily BEFORE the actual hay fever season starts.

Herbal remedies. Amacha (hydrangea tea, usually drank on April 8, Buddha’s birthday), and special tea blends are believed to relieve hay fever a bit. Just don’t cut those beauties on the street, buy it at your local Chinese medicine store. hay fever remedies

Honey, especially manuka honey from New Zealand, also helps to strengthen your immune system, and therefore tame the hay fever.

Smoothies made of leafy green vegetables. Basically, everything green goes. Some people here in Japan say it makes hay fever go away completely or at least makes it less severe.

Medicine (not antihistamines). Probiotics are not only useful for reducing the antibiotics side effects. They also play a significant role in reducing your allergies, especially hay fever.
