Stroll by the American Air Base in Fussa Not even many Japanese have heard of “Fussa”, a small city located in the western Tokyo Metropolis. But like Yokosuka, Fussa is a place where you can find a strong American presence. While Yokosuka serves as an American navy base, one third of Fussa city is occupied by the American Air Force, formally known as “United States Air Force Yokata Air Base”. Fussa is a perfect spot if you want to escape the metropolis and indulge yourself in an exotic atmosphere. From Shinjuku station, it takes only around an hour to go to Fussa by train. The famous street in Fussa is called “Base Side Street”. Like its name suggests, it is located alongside the American Air Force Base. Established in 1945, it is an historic street that does not only remind you of America, but more precisely, America of the 60s. Stroll along the street planted with palm trees and pop into the exotic stores that remind you of that period of America: rusted English road signs, yellowed Hollywood posters, hippie necklaces and scarves. And of course, military goods that remind you where you are. Come here to enjoy a lazy and exotic afternoon!
