Fusaki Kannondo in Ishigaki Island, Okinawa

Fusaki Kannondo (冨崎観音堂) in Ishigaki is neither a famous temple, nor a popular tourist spot. It is just a nice place not far from the beach, where you can forget about everyday life and enjoy the calmness of Ishigaki Island. On your way there you are most likely to be completely alone. Only some passing by cars will disturb your meditation.

The entrance of Fusaki Kannondo can be seen from the beach. We walked there from Fusaki Resort Village.Fusaki KannondoFusaki KannondoTake a last look at the wonderful blue ocean, and walk past several houses, guarded by cheerful shisa.Fusaki KannondoThe only time when Fusaki Kannondo gets absolutely crowded, is New Year. People line up in front of the shrine to have a chance make a wish in front of Fusaki Kannon Bosatsu. Although it is customary for 初詣 (hatsumōde) to visit major Shinto Shrines, small shrines and Buddhist temples are also packed.  It is because it is really hard to track down a temple in Okinawa, especially outside of the main island.Fusaki KannondoOn all other days Fusaki Kannondo is completely at your disposal. Enjoy the lanterns with deer images on your way. The greenery is also very relaxing.Fusaki KannondoFusaki KannondoThe temple was built in the beginning of 18th century. The statue of Fusaki Kannon was established here to pray for the safety of sailors and ships in Ishigaki.Fusaki KannondoFusaki Kannondo
