Fukushimaya Tasting Market: Supermarket with organic, additive-free food

Fukushimaya in Ark Hills, Roppongi-Itchome opened in 2014. I discovered it only recently and was charmed by organic, additive-free (無添加) meat, eggs, and vegetables, made by producers from all over Japan and carefully gathered there by the founder and chairman Toru Fukushima.

Let me make a list of emotions I had experienced that evening (in fact, less than in one hour):

Surprise. While I was pondering over my choice of foods at Fukushimaya delicatessen, a nice-looking bag of homemade cookies already disappeared from the stall. That was fast!FukushimayaHappiness. Because you know, I was able to get lots of yummy food and a coffee at Fukushimaya for less than 1300 yen. For the record, I’m not (too) stingy, but spending much money in one sitting makes me feel uncomfortable. Plus no eatery or restaurant in Japan encourages doggy bags. Here, on the contrary, I didn’t even have to finish eating everything. Actually, I bought enough for the dinner AND for the next day’s breakfast.FukushimayaFukushimayaThe rice balls really tasted like an additive-free. Or is it just my imagination? I bought two pieces of a baked cheesecake with a 200 yen discount, just because it was its expiration date. In fact, the cakes are sold within 3 days of the production date. My cake consisted of: flour, sugar, cream cheese, fresh cream, lemon juice, eggs, Parmesan and Grana Padano cheese.Fukushimaya

Confusion. Heating up your food by yourself (when you are used that the cashier at combini does it) is tough. You try to guess which button to puch and then pray that the plastic box doesn’t explode inside the microwave oven.

Irritation. Some loud teenagers were waiting for their parents to do the shopping.

Loneliness. After all, eating alone is not always fun. But at least there was no waiter to communicate with, and I didn’t have to wait for the receipt.

There’s also a coffee kiosk “Be a good neighbor”, and a wine shop called THE CELLAR Roppongi. With such a triad, what else one might possibly wish on Sunday?Fukushimaya
