Delicious buffet at Restaurant Avant, Hotel Harvest Kyukaruizawa Breakfast included. This is music to my ears when traveling! Not only because I like buffets, because who doesn’t? But also because morning is the time of the day when you just want to drink as much coffee as you need to wake up, and eat as much warm toasts as you like. Or pastry and jam. Or even Japanese pickles ochazuke. My breakfast, and coffee with pastry for dessert. And I forgot to take a picture after getting some delicious whipped Hokkaido butter. It is soft and goes perfectly with croissants. Actually there are not so many dining choices in Karuizawa, so we also had dinner at Restaurant Avant. For real gourmets and history lovers there was also a special “Sanada” (the castle of Sanada Yukimura/Maru was in Nagano Prefecture) course available for 10,800 yen. Kaiseki cuisine would have been twice as expensive, but we went for the regular buffet. It was my first autumn buffet in Japan, and I was impressed by the variety. Mushrooms, fish, potatoes, eggplants, and many other delicious foods were lovingly arranged on tiny plates.
