Cute, jazzy and laid-back South Shimokitazawa

Shimokitazawa is not my favorite place in Tokyo, but it has a certain charm that other places can’t offer. Something about the atmosphere: it resembles classy Jiyugaoka, infused with old-book town Jimbocho.Shimokitazawa

Quiet narrow streets with stylish little boutiques, second-hand clothes, books, small galleries and antique shops… Welcome to South Shimokitazawa!ShimokitazawaShimokitazawaWith many festivals held all year round, it is a nice (and easily accessible from Shinjuku and Shibuya) place to visit in any season.

Surprisingly, Shimokitazawa is not a popular destination for tourists. It is rather a quiet and artsy haven for Tokyoites that got tired of crowded Omotesando, Harajuku, Ginza, and other popular shopping areas. I discovered this area after two years of living in Japan. My foreign friend said that her foreign friend highly appreciated  the laid-back atmosphere, so we headed there for a Sunday stroll.ShimokitazawaVery close to the south exit of Shimokitazawa Station you will see a Big Ben. It is a small shopping mall and a clock with the name that’s too glorious, but nevertheless attractive.ShimokitazawaThe streets of Shimokita are full of cuteness. Here and there you will see funny signboards, interesting or even nostalgic shop names, and kawaii details.ShimokitazawaShimokitazawaJazz – one more thing that reminds of Kanda-Jimbocho area.ShimokitazawaThere are many coffee and tea shops to choose from if you are tired, and many small restaurants and bars if you are hungry. We actually walked around several times before making a final decision about how hungry we are. Because some shops are just too irresistible even if they serve only traditional Japanese tea and desserts.ShimokitazawaShimokitazawaMany Japanese people associate the place with theaters and music, but there is much more to that!Shimokitazawa
