Creperie Ti ROLANDE: Chic and affordable crêperie in Shibuya

In Japan, there’s an expression «Why don’t we go to a French restaurant? » which is shorthand for the bombastic «Why don’t we spend a ridiculously huge sum of money at one sitting? ». But it does not always have to be true.

Visiting a creperie in Tokyo often means a nice and affordable meal in a rustic French setting (and sometimes even chatting with waiters in French).


How about those crepe stands in Harajuku? Let the youngsters enjoy all that whipped cream and raw fillings. They are cheap and fancy-looking, but that’s about it. The real crepe or galette is a masterpiece itself. Thin and tender, with a tad crispy edge, an eggy taste and buttery coating… Rolling them into a cone like Japanese do, makes me roll my eyes in exasperation.

«Au Temps Jadis» is situated in Shibuya. It has a charming exterior with French-style ambience, and people say that the crepes taste superb, but checking their menu online made me shrug uncomfortably. They’ve even gone as far as removing all prices from their official website!


On the other hand, a tea time set at Creperie Ti ROLANDE in Shibuya near Bunkamura is as reasonable as 1000 yen. The set includes one crepe of your choice and a cup of coffee or tea. Our waitress talked in English with a mild French accent  reminding me of Hercule Poirot (please forgive my obsession with Agatha Christie!).

My friend and I ordered one savory and one sweet crepe, and shared them. They were huge and we could barely finish them. Considering that we are women we presumably eat less than men. Not sure about that, though!


Please note that prices at Galette House Ti Rolande near Shibuya station are higher because they specialize in galettes with buckwheat flour.
