Chicken restaurant ‘Toriyoshi’ in Shinjuku – Try their famous deep fried chicken wings!

When my husband suggested going to a chicken restaurant, I was honestly thinking yakitori. That time this wasn’t the case. Actually, there was a yakitori restaurant on the fourth floor, but we went to the Toriyoshi (鳥良) on the fifth floor. The area in Shinjuku has three the restaurants, while there are around 20 branches in Tokyo. Our restaurant of choice was called Shinjuku shop number 1.ToriyoshiIt will be a wise decision to go there with a Japanese person or someone who is very good at reading in Japanese, because even the prices at Toriyoshi are written in kanji. It was really frustrating for me because overall the restaurant is not foreigner-oriented. So I just spaced out while my Japanese husband read the menu and ordered our food and drinks. Therefore, the dinner course was full of surprises. Every new dish I saw was somehow familiar, but not quite.ToriyoshiOur starter was a cold cream of mushroom soup, but I can’t be 100% sure. The waiter mentioned its name so quickly that we could not remember it. It definitely tasted and looked very mushroomy, and looking back, it was the most delicious part of that dinner. And those pictures of a turnip on the outside of the bowl and of a small eggplant on the inside were simply adorable!ToriyoshiThen we tried the famous fried chicken wings (手羽先から揚げ, tebasaki karaage). They tasted good, but not as great as yakitori. I guess I am more of a yakitori girl than a karaage girl.ToriyoshiHowever, that didn’t prevent me from eating more than a half of the wings and cabbage that went with them.ToriyoshiI can’t say anything bad about the tofu in an earthenware bowl or a huge chicken nabe pot, but afterwards we agreed that they tasted rather plain.ToriyoshiThe waitress insisted on adding a so-called ‘collagen’ to the nabe soup. It looked quite disgusting, and I suspect that it was lard.ToriyoshiOverall, Toriyoshi was a nice and relaxing place with mellow music, minimalist design, and elaborate tableware.ToriyoshiWe were so full that we didn’t even order a dessert. The ball in the picture is some kind of condiment.
