Borscht at one of the Oldest Russian Restaurants in Tokyo

Restaurant Rogovski (ロゴスキー) was established in Shibuya. It had been operating there since 1951. This spring it was temporarily closed but will reopen on September 18, 2015 in Ginza. I will definitely go there to compare the old and new design and dishes!

I went to Rogovski in Shibuya with my Russian friend. After that lunch she decided to take her foreign husband and his Japanese co-workers to Rogovski too. They had a nice dinner, but she confessed that the best combination of price and quality was at lunchtime. I paid only around 1000 yen for the delicious and filling set with Russian-style tea.

As the restaurant is in the process of renewal, their online menu is not accessible at the moment.

In the meantime, you can try borscht and 6 kinds of handmade pirozhky made by Rogovski restaurant at a number of department stores.

Here is the schedule for the rest of the summer (2015):
July 29 (Wed.) – August 4 (Tue.) Mitsukoshi Ebisu
August 13 (Thu.) – August 19 (Wed.) Tokyu Department Store, Plaza shop
August 20 (Thu.) – August 26 (Wed.)  Tobu Department Store, Funabashi shop
August 26 (Wed.) – September 1 (Tue.) Tokyu Department Store Re Shi Pi Aobadai

Borscht is a beetroot soup of Ukrainian origin, popular in Eastern Slavic countries (Russia, Ukraine, and Belorussia [Belarus]) and in Poland. It is usually eaten with sour cream and rye bread, which balance the sweet-sour taste. Did you know that the Soviet cosmonauts ate borscht in tubes during their flights?

This French-Russian dish of chicken, mushrooms, cream and cheese is called julienne.

The main dish was Beef Stroganoff with a side of baked potatoes, pickled cucumbers and Russian potato salad.
