Azalea’s at Daikouzenji Temple Whether you are visiting Daikouzenji Temple in the spring or fall, you will witness the magnificent natural beauties that Japan has to offer. Though Daikouzenji is known for its beautiful Azaelas that bloom in the spring, the autumn leaves are equally as breath taking in fall. Mid April to early May is the best time to see the Azaleas in full bloom. There are an estimated 50,000 Azaleas to view along the winding paths of this mountainside temple. When you go behind the temple, you can see thousands of brightly coloured flowers cascading down the mountainside which makes this spot quite magical and dream-like. In the same area, you will find a home made gelato stand with grape and matcha flavours. On the street close by, you can buy lunch or do some shopping at the local vendors, which sell delicious foods, goods and teas. We brought our own pre-made Bento. If you plan ahead you can rent a small Japanese style cabin and view the Azalea’s from there while eating your lunch. If you are driving, you can park along the roadside at the bottom of the temple as many locals do, and hike up. You can take the train from Fukuoka to Kiyama station and there is a bus service that will take you right to the temple. This is a place I would like to visit every year with my family. The beautiful views and fresh air make this spot a must-see for all visitors to Fukuoka.
