“Alice on Wednesday”: Visit Wonderland

It’s easy to be an Alice in Wonderland fan if you have a couple of thousand yen to spare. To be precise, at least 3,000 yen per person. Because at some Alice-themed restaurants you will be charged a seat fee (around 500-600 yen) and will be required to order a certain amount of food and drink.

If you want a real and reasonably priced souvenir from Wonderland, you should visit «Alice on Wednesday» near Meiji-Jingumae station.

Alice Shop

The store is full of hair accessories, jewelry, tote bags, T-shirts etc. with different versions of Alice: the Macmillan Alice, the Disney Alice and the Blythe Alice.

The other downsides to the Alice in Wonderland restaurants are that they are sometimes difficult to find and they may be smaller and darker that you expect. If that is not enough to make you give up going to one of the many Alice-themed cafes and restaurants in Tokyo, I will add one more reason. At least half of all visitors complain about the quality of their dishes. You may end up with a cute and delicious soufflé with the March hare’s face or nicely arranged card-shaped crackers, served by staff dressed as Alice. Or you may get spaghetti with a Cheshire cat’s face that tastes like it was boiled yesterday. You never know.

You may visit the «Alice on Wednesday» store instead of the restaurant, or as your first step to becoming an experienced Alice in Wonderland restaurant-goer.

Their choice of food is limited to snacks, but you can buy cute Eat Me cookies, and Drink me Cider, which comes in blue, pink and transparent colors.

When to visit: definitely on weekdays and preferably during working hours. Although the store has three floors, it is rather small and gets extremely busy on weekends. The entrance is a small door like in the book, so there is always a guard in a blue uniform who will usher you in. Sometimes the number of customers inside is controlled.
